This is a big movie weekend!  Not so much that it’s Oscars weekend, although I do want to see Avatar clean house.  I’m also trying to go see two of the new releases coming out – Brooklyn’s Finest and Alice in Wonderland.

Check out the trailers for both.  What do you think?

Brooklyn’s Finest is my type of movie to the core – a gritty, intricate cops-and-robbers type flick.  And Don Cheadle and Ethan Hawke are two of my favorite actors.  I can’t imagine it will disappoint.

Tim Burton movies are hit or miss with me.  Batman, Sleepy Hollow, Sweeney Todd…all great!  Planet of the Apes, Edward Scissorhands…ehh, not so much.  I can dig the whole dark, bizarre theme that he usually goes with.  And I hear that there are Lord of the Rings type battle scenes in his version.

Answer: Riddle Me This #1

Posted on March 5, 2010 · Leave a Comment

I won’t hold you in suspense any longer.  Wouldn’t want you ripping all of your hair out.  Here is the answer to last week’s riddle…

Simply pile up all of the books except the 1″ one. This will give you 18 inches. Open the top book, turning 1″ worth of pages. Use the yardstick to verify the height.

If you want to be really technical, you should actually open the bottom book, because the bulge caused by the open book will then be flattened by the other books.

So was anyone close to solving this?  Stay tuned for a new riddle coming soon!

Are you into audiobooks?

Posted on March 5, 2010 · Leave a Comment

How do you feel about audiobooks?  With the advent of mp3 players and iPods, the popularity of audiobooks has ballooned over the past few years.  Not to mention that people are generally much busier than in years past.  Who has the time to sit and read anymore?  Especially when you can throw on the audiobook and listen to it during your morning commute or while on the treadmill at the gym.  I’ve listened to a couple and I’m sold.  I even bought one of those “Learn to Speak” language guides in an audiobook to try to teach myself mandarin chinese.  That project, however, didn’t seem to go over so well – but I’m still working on it.

In any case, I loooove free stuff.  So when I came across this site  offering free audiobooks, I figured I’d share my joy with you.  Apparently there are free audiobooks all over the world wide web.  This site basically tracks all of the free downloads and hosts their links.  Cool, right?  I don’t think you’ll find any books from the New York Times Best Seller’s list, but if you’re into classic literature, you may find something you enjoy.  Check it out if you get a chance and let me know if you find anything good.

Riddle Me This #1

Posted on February 26, 2010 · 3 Comments

Research shows that regular brain exercises, such as riddles and puzzles, can help prevent the onset of Alzheimer’s disease.  Besides, they’re fun to do!  If you have a minute, try to figure this one out and post your explanation as a comment.  Also, for those of you that need a hint, I’ve posted one as a comment.  I’ll put up the answer sometime next week.  Let’s see who the real brainiacs of Walden at Chatham Center are!

You are a med student working in a chemistry lab and you need to prop up a beaker of water so that its base is exactly 17″ above the table (don’t worry about why). Besides the beaker, the only objects in the lab are a yardstick and five phone books, at 1″, 3″, 4″, 5″, and 6″ thick each.

How do you arrange the books so that you can prop up the beaker at the correct height?

poker1Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ve probably noticed that popularity for the game of poker, particularly the No Limit Texas Hold ‘Em version of the game, has exploded over the past few years.  It’s played in virtually every casino – from Atlantic City to Macau – and on several prominent online destinations.  It’s now even a weekly sports programming staple on popular networks such as NBC and ESPN.  With cash prizes at major tournaments sometimes exceeding $1,000,000, it’s easy to see why so many people have taken an interest.  I once heard the game referred to as “the new lottery.”

Do you know how to play?  While gambling for money in the state of Georgia is illegal, you can still have fun learning to play with friends before your next trip to Vegas.  Trust me on this – it’s an easy game to learn but a very difficult game to master.  All you need is a deck of cards and a set of poker chips.  A card table wouldn’t hurt either – to give you that authentic casino feel.

If enough people are interested, it might be a cool idea to start a weekly game here at Walden at Chatham Center.  What do you think?  Do you have what it takes to put all of your chips on the line and go all in?  I’m a huge fan of the game so if you have any questions or ideas, drop me a comment.
