Are you in a rom-com mood?

I’m not usually a romantic-comedy kind of guy, but I watched the trailer for the new movie Going the Distance and it actually looks like it could be pretty funny; more on the comedy side than the romantic side. Kind of like a Meet the Parents type film.
It starts Drew Barrymore and Dustin Long (the young, hip guy from the Apple vs. IBM commercials). Here’s the trailer. Check it out. And if you get moved to the point that you feel you want to see it in the theater this Labor Day weekend, here are the showtimes for theaters in Savannah near Walden at Chatham Center: Trademark Cinemas Victory Stadium 9, Carmike 10 – Savannah and Carmike Wynnsong 11. Enjoy!
Miley Cyrus in “The Last Song” at Redbox

The Last Song
Miley Cyrus shines as the star of this heartwarming coming-of-age movie that will strike your emotional chords. Based on the novel by Nicholas Sparks, The Last Song follows Ronnie and her estranged father as he tries to restore the loving relationship they once had. But reconnecting with his rebellious daughter isn’t easy, so he chooses the one thing they still have in common — music. Rated PG. Genre: Drama, Romance.
To be honest, I have actually no desire to rent this movie. Miley Cyrus is a bit overrated as an actress and quite frankly, it’s just not my type of film. So, you’re probably asking why I’m recommending it to you. My five year-old daughter. That’s the reason.
She is one of the biggest Hannah Montana fans alive and tries to watch her hero Miley when she can. And while I’m not too keen on letting her follow the racy verson of Cyrus, I don’t mind so much that she watches her in a more wholesome light. So I’m going to check out The Last Song to see if it’s appropriate for her. Although I really don’t see why it wouldn’t be. Has anyone seen it already?
You can rent it this week on DVD. The closest Redbox kiosks to Walden at Chatham Center are at Walgreens (4210 Augusta Rd), Kroger (3310 Ogeechee Rd and 311 E Gwinnett St).

Rent “The Runaways” at Redbox

The Runaways
Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning star as Joan Jett and Cherie Currie in the music-fueled coming of age story of the groundbreaking, all-girl rock band, THE RUNAWAYS. They fall under the Svengali-like influence of rock impresario Kim Fowley (Michael Shannon, Pearl Harbor), who turns the rebellious Southern California kids into a rock group with outrageous success. With its tough-chick image and raw talent, the band quickly earns a name for itself and so do its two leads: Joan is the band’s pure rock n’ roll heart, while Cherie, with her Bowie-Bardot looks, is the sex kitten. Rated R.
I’m kind of looking forward to renting this movie. I think Dakota Fanning is a great actress and it will be interesting to see the some of the history that goes along with women entering the Rock-n-Roll biz. Must have been wild times!

If you liked the movies Cop Land, Girl Interrupted, Walk the Line or 3:10 to Yuma, you might be interested to know that Knight and Day was directed by the same guy, James Mangold. That should be enough to tell you that there will be some great action scenes and the chemistry between the stars should shine through.
Check out the trailer and let me know what you think. It opens this week. Here are movie times for theatres near Walden at Chatham Center: Trademark Cinemas Victory Stadium 9, Carmike 10 – Savannah and Carmike Wynnsong 11.

A
manipulative, conniving aristocrat enlists the aid of a former lover to help get revenge against an unsuspecting damsel. This is the stuff that really good, juicy dramas are made out of! It’s also a brief description of a French novel, Les Liaisons Dangereuses, that has been adapated for stage.
The story is so good, it has already been made into several successful films, including 1988’s Dangerous Liaisons starring Glenn Close, John Malkovich and Michelle Pfeiffer; and 1999’s Cruel Intentions, starring Ryan Phillippe, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Reese Witherspoon.
Sound interesting? Come check out a stage version here in Savannah at the Indigo Arts Center (703D Louisville Rd.). They will be performing it for 3 nights only from June 24-26 at 8:00 p.m. Tickets are only $10 (cash or check).
While tickets will be sold at the door, reservations are recommended due to limited seating. You can email requests to threemusesproductions@gmail.com.
